Moving Faithfully Beyond the Limits: Bishop John Shelby Spong [Rebroadcast]

We revisit our 2016 interview with retired Episcopal Bishop John Shelby Spong about his long career, and some of his iconoclastic stances toward faith.  We also talk about his recent book, Biblical Literalism: A Gentile Heresy.

Spong has a new book, Unbelievable: Why Neither Ancient Creeds Nor the Reformation Can Produce a Living Faith Today, which was released in February 2018.

Spong was bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark for 24 years before his retirement in 2001. He is considered a champion and proponent of progressive Christianity. His positions have often been controversial. This has made him a hero to some, while others treat him with wary suspicion.

In this hour-long interview, host David Dault digs in deep to the history, theology, and science that informs Bishop Spong's positions.

In the process, we discuss one of Bishop Spong's most recent books, Biblical Literalism: A Gentile Heresy. In the book, Spong argues that Christians need to become re-acquainted with the Jewish roots of Christian scripture, or else risk mis-reading the text, with disastrous consequences.

Whether you agree or disagree with Bishop Spong's positions, everyone who listens will learn and benefit from this rich and informative conversation.
